Jocko’s Bible & the USS Yorktown

One of the highlights of the trip for me happened while we were walking past a display in the officers’ mess.  It was near a portrait of Admiral Joseph Clark, a native of the Cherokee Nation (which at his birth in 1893 had not yet been made a part of Oklahoma).

The Great Conversation

Christ’s resurrection, which the Church traditionally celebrates during Easter, gives us a glimpse of that wonderful promise we have–that we will be resurrected in the Last Day, in the power of the Holy Spirit, and live with God forever. When we see Him, we will be like Him, scripture says. When we see Him face to face, we will know Him as we are known. There will be no more war, no more tears–all will be well– what the church has conventionally called the Beatific Vision.

The Speech Meet as Worship

Students get nervous heading into our annual Speech Meet; they work very hard at memorizing, and at the same time know they will be up on that big stage all by themselves.  The two-day event is one of the most wonderful things that happens here.  That might be hard to keep in mind if you’re in the process of pushing a son or daughter to finish preparing!  Yet I’d like to invite you to look at it from a sanctuary perspective.

Math as a Social Justice Tool? What will be next?

I read an essay from the National Science Foundation website entitled, “How can STEM Disciplines and STEM Education Work in Concert to Address Systemic Racism and the COVID-19 Pandemic? Creating a New Normal for STEM Education.” It is written by two professors, one at New York University and one at the University of Connecticut. The very first sentence of the essay is, “As science disciplines are at center stage in providing solutions to the COVID-19 pandemic, they are also complicit in the systemic racism that is endemic in society at large.”

Want to Give Your Child a “Normal” Childhood?

Greetings, Geneva families.  The National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP) conducts many studies of how American students are doing in school.  Results from the 2019 Math and Reading Assessments have been published.  There are three skill levels: Advanced, Proficient, and Basic.  “Proficient” for the NAEP means a student has “demonstrated competency over challenging subject matter.”  “Basic” means a student only has partial mastery.

“…Amen & A-Woman”

On Monday, January 4th, we started school again this morning, with prayer.  So did Congress!  You may have heard about the controversy…Democratic Representative Cleaver, who is a Methodist pastor, offered a prayer which ended in the following words:

Christ, Light of the World

Happy New Year! The Lord’s Day (November 29th), the First Sunday of Advent, began a new liturgical year. Customarily, Advent is when we begin looking forward to our coming celebration of the remembrance of Christ’s “Advent” – or coming – into the world.  We begin looking forward to an already accomplished historical fact. It can get very complicated if you think about it too much. But I digress.
